Lakewood is the place where I go to practice yoga, grab a few drinks with friends, and eat the best pizza in town—Angelo’s! There are so many different things to do there, but if people don’t know how to get to them, what good are they? Now my vibrant neighborhood of Lakewood is showing them off with a new identity and wayfinding system – it’s a long overdue “hey, look at me” moment and I like it.
I think it better expresses the city’s brand spirit and best attractions, which in my opinion are its bars, restaurants and unique shops. The wayfinding reinforces Lakewood as a great community to where you can just live life — something that I, and many Lakewood residents already know. Kudos to Studio Graphique and the city’s movers and shakers for making this happen.
On many different levels, I’ve come to appreciate the new look. It enhances the sense of community that I think makes Lakewood so appealing – I might even say that it makes me more excited to live there. Here’s why I’m so into it:
As a driver: One of the challenges about Lakewood is finding parking, even if you are familiar with the area. It brings up an interesting point: if you have a parking lot, you should point it out to people. The new wayfinding clearly marks where to find parking, which positively affects both retail businesses and their customers.
As a cyclist and pedestrian: Safety is an issue when you are trying to navigate through the most congested parts of Lakewood. A new bike lane is being constructed in the downtown area to help give cyclists a safe place on the road. My hope is that these signs help remind the crazy drivers of Cleveland that we are all sharing the road – no one owns it. Also, I love the pops of color that the bike rack and sign bring to the streets. Color makes me happy, and I like being happy.
As a designer: I appreciate the historic elements that are incorporated into the new system—the type, the shapes—the whole thing has a sort of “sports ball” feel to it, which makes sense—it is a very active town, full of people biking, running, and playing in parks. And, regardless of the Cleveland sports curse, the bars are always packed with devoted fans, probably for the delicious craft beers and tasty tapas, but nonetheless, they are packed. Also, I’m pleased that readability is no longer an issue—you can probably read the street signs from outer space.
I believe Lakewood will reap the benefits of this new system. When an area has effective wayfinding, people can navigate without getting frustrated, making them want to stay longer, explore more, and come back, which can only improve the local economy and reputation. And now that Lakewood has universities, hospitals, banks, offices, shops, restaurants and about a million bars to choose from – it’s about time it got some signage to reflect all that it has to offer. This neighborhood is something to be proud of – I know I sure am.
